ROSEWOOD STUDENT GALLERY - Not just for students!

Open to all 2D artists!

The Rosewood Student Gallery was created in 2006 to showcase the artwork of the Rosewood students, instructors, and visiting artists.  The Rosewood Student Gallery is located in the Rosewood Arts Centre lobby and features dark brick walls.  The space can hold up to ten 2D pieces from hanging wire and hooks.  The Rosewood Gallery Coordinator will hang the show or assist the artist with the installation.  Artists are responsible for any tags, accompanying materials, and sales of the artwork.  The Gallery does not take a commission, nor is the work insured while on display.  This is a great opportunity for local artists to showcase their work in front of a new group of patrons.  Since the gallery is located in a central meeting area, we are not able to display work that contains profanity or nudity.  Please contact the Rosewood Gallery Coordinator for more information.

Documenting Your Artwork

The best light for photographing artwork is overcast or indirect natural light. Resist the urge to resort to flash unless you absolutely have to (if the day is really dark and dreary, your images may pick up a blue cast). If your pieces are small (less than 10" x 14"), then you may be able to lay them flat on the ground and shoot from above. Larger work will be more easily shot if you lean it up against the wall. Either way, you may also find it beneficial to place a large piece of white cardboard or foam core behind your painting. This will eliminate any distracting background and allow the viewer to focus on your artwork. You will find this helpful especially if you are shooting slides, since your cropping options will be limited. Whether you lay the art flat or lean it up against the wall, your challenge will be to shoot the artwork straight on, without skewing the frame or edges by leaning one way or the other. Imagine the plane your film is occupying in space and try to keep it completely parallel to your painting. Your goal is to hold the camera as if you were to lay the film flat against the painting. Use a tripod if you have a hard time keeping the film plane parallel or keeping the camera steady.  These are the basics of documenting your artwork, this information and more specific details are available at http://www.betterphoto.com.
