| Safe Routes to School Program (SR2S) |
| The Kettering Safety Section has useful information on both improving and developing safe and healthy ways of getting to school that you can use in your school community, safely navigating your neighborhood or as classroom resources. Safety Section members are committed to working as pro-actively as possible with school and neighborhood communities to achieve these outcomes: |
| 1) |
to enable and encourage children, including those with disabilities, to walk and bicycle to school; |
| 2) |
to make bicycling and walking to school a safer and more appealing transportation alternative, thereby encouraging a healthy and active lifestyle from an early age; and |
| 3) |
to facilitate the planning, development, and implementation of projects and activities that will improve safety and reduce traffic, fuel consumption, air pollution in the vicinity of schools. |
Safety Section programs include pedestrian safety education classes, development of Suggested Safe Routes Maps for bicycling and walking to each school, and promotional events during Walk to School Day and Bike to School Day. The program will help children reduce their risk in traffic now, and help build the foundation and knowledge that can make them safer in traffic throughout their lives.
In addition to the All Wheeled Activity Safety Education Safety education programs aligned to the Ohio Department of Education curriculum standards, the Safety supervisors may also present and provide information on Pedestrian Safety. Various materials may be provided for use in your classroom or home school programs by calling 296-2520 or email marc.rasor@ketteringoh.org.
