The Dor-Wood Optimist Club has sponsored the Kettering Safety Village for 41 years. The City of Kettering’s Transportation Safety Section is proud to operate the program in conjunction with the Kettering School system. The Village was established to provide you and your child with basic traffic safety and life safety education. Safety Village consists of scaled down streets, buildings and intersections constructed at one of the City of Kettering’s elementary schools. The scaled down village includes real traffic and pedestrian signals, street signs, and pavement markings in a secured outdoor site next to the school building.
The children practice crossing the street and driving Kettcars in a changing physical and social environment. Safety professionals believe these concepts are important in helping your child understand and feel comfortable with the new experience of traveling to and from school. The program is designed for children entering kindergarten this fall. Re-enforcement of the life safety skills taught to the students is provided to parents during special adult classes and through the school year to various elementary grades.
Your child will learn about traffic signs and signals, seat belt safety, safety patrols, school bus safety, animal safety, personal safety, fire safety, water safety and poison safety. The City’s Safety Supervisors, Police and Fire personnel will teach the class lessons and are assisted by Kettering volunteers.
A parent/grandparent class is offered at no additional cost to you. This class will help you to reinforce the concepts your child will learn in the Village. You will learn of other community safety resources and activities through presentations by City Safety Supervisor, Police and Fire staff. You will gain valuable life safety and emergency preparedness concepts to further help your family. The Parent’s Class is conducted during the same time as the child's class. Parents or grandparents participating in the Parent’s Class have an added benefit by use of the on-site childcare for younger siblings at no further cost.
Special thanks to the Dor-Wood Optimist Club for their continued support.
