The All Wheeled Activity Safety Education program is developed to bring injury prevention awareness to adults and children participating in bicycle riding, roller skating/in line skating, scooter usage and skate boarding. The City of Kettering has a bicycle and in-line skate helmet law for all children age 16 and under.
The Citys educational program focuses on proper protective gear, helmet use and proper fitting and regulations created for the safety of all residents. The Safety Section, Fire Department and Police Department provide further emphasis on all wheeled activity proper helmet use, bicycle driving skills, traffic regulations and bicycle registration in case of loss or theft of bicycles.
By teaming with schools, civic organizations, and community events, the format is able to present the program directly to the children in a controlled learning environment. The most important safety doctrine when using any wheeled recreational or transportation device is to make sure a helmet is worn on every ride. It is the one action a bicyclist or skater can take to reduce head injury in a crash.
The Safety Sections program is based on a fun interactive educational process to be delivered through the schools is aligned with Ohio Department of Education curriculum subjects.
For on-bike driving practice, the bicycle helmet and safety education program consists of a helmet fitting station, bicycle inspection station, and bicycle skill course. Constructed to resemble a miniature city with props consisting of cars, intersections, loose roadway items, and emergency vehicles to bring the course to life, children get a safe learning environment to practice new skills. With driveways, intersections, railroad crossings and road hazards, participants simulate actual riding conditions and use hand signals and their best judgment to traverse the course. A bicycle safety driving mini-camp will be held in partnership with law enforcement and firefighter bicyclist to afford real neighborhood driving experiences. Learning activities would include bicycle equipment, maintaining safe bicycles and proper safety gear.
