Winter Weather Preparedness
The City of Kettering Public Service Department plans for winter storms months ahead, even when the weather
is warm! Organization and careful use
of resources ensure safe driving routes.
The City of Kettering has established
(14) primary snow routes which provide
one connected, continuous system, enabling traffic flow throughout
the City. Primary routes include major thoroughfares, hills, curves, emergency vehicle access, bus routes, and school access.
Our drivers clear an equivalent of 887 miles, while plowing the City!
While snow continues to fall,
focus will be put upon main roadways only.
After 3-4” of accumulation, and cessation of snowfall, side streets in the City will then be plowed.

The City of Kettering is committed to maintaining a comparable level
of service as in previous years. Therefore, we need to continue
to be “salt smart”. Prudent salt price negotiations, additional driver
training, careful equipment calibration, and pre-brining the streets
are just a few ways the City of Kettering will continue to operate
without reduction in service. We will increase our usage of brine. You’ll notice white “stripes” on the City roadways as a result of this solution. Anti-icing solution (brine) is economical, prevents ice and snow from bonding to the pavement, provides up to an hour of melting power,
and eases plowing.

The safety of our citizens is a top priority, and we work hard
to provide reasonably safe and passable road surfaces
throughout the year.
Tips for residents:
Stay informed about pending weather conditions
Allow extra travel time
Maintain a safe following distance and slower speeds
Avoid peak traffic hours
Do not attempt to pass snowplow trucks, which are plowing in teams
Remove parked vehicles from street
Snow plowed across driveways is unavoidable. When shoveling,
you may consider placing the snow on the left side of your driveway
(as you face your property) to lessen the amount of shoveling due
to snow plow deposits.
Carefully clear sidewalks as soon as practical
Take breaks when shoveling to avoid exhaustion
